The Set Table – Event Analysis of Anuga 2017

If you are a food manufacturer or buyer, or simply want to know what the food and beverage industry offers and what trends consumers can expect, a visit to the Anuga in Cologne is a must-attend event.

In recent years, Anuga has enjoyed a steady growth in participants and attendees, which also benefited the hotel industry. Compared with 2015, the number of exhibitors grew by almost 6% with 7,400 companies participating. These and the approximate 165,000 trade visitors from 198 countries provided an increase in demand. This was conveyed in the three important hotel figures that showed generally positive values. The hotel specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Occupancy (Occ), Average Room Rate (ADR) and Revenue per Available Room (RevPar) rose by 6.5%, 4.8% and 1.6% respectively compared to the last Anuga held two years ago.

The notable fact is that the Anuga had already shone in 2015 with marked positive growth rates in the RevPar and ADR. Thus 2017 is even stronger given that there is no previous “weakness” to be compared to. Business of the hotel industry during the Anuga is also growing for the fourth time in a row. Since 2009, the ADR increased by an average of 8.3% from trade fair to trade fair, and RevPar by 11.4%.

Anuga Yearly Comparison

Primus inter pares or “first among equals” in the hotel performance comparison is the four-star category based on Fairmas Benchmarking. For the four-star hotels, the growth of the average room rate and the RevPar is twice as high as that of the total market.

As far as Anuga is concerned, Friedhelm Dornseifer, President of the German Retail Federation the Federal Association of the German Retail Grocery Trade (BVLH), has also said himself, “Once again, we have experienced a record-setting Anuga”, [1] pertaining to the internationally acclaimed business platform for the food industry. A perfect example of a domino effect indeed – with the success of Anuga 2017, follows the success of the hotel industry as well.

The hotel industry had Monday, third day of the event, as the strongest day with an occupancy rate of 97.9% and a RevPar of 368.80 €.

The next Anuga will take place from 5 to 9 October 2019.
